About
Vibrocompaction

Vibrocompaction is a ground improvement technique that densifies loose saturated granular soils using a high-frequency vibrating probe. The process rearranges soil particles into a denser configuration, increasing soil density, improving bearing capacity and reducing settlement and liquefaction potential, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial, commercial and infrastructure projects.

With extensive expertise in vibro ground improvement, Menard designs each Vibrocompaction solution according to the site’s geotechnical conditions, structural requirements and performance objectives. Every installation is carried out under rigorous quality control procedures to ensure consistent treatment quality, reliable ground improvement and compliance with project specifications.

Densifying granular soils through deep vibration

Vibrocompaction is a ground improvement technique that densifies loose saturated granular soils using a high-frequency vibrating probe. The process rearranges soil particles into a denser configuration, increasing soil density, improving bearing capacity and reducing settlement, providing a reliable foundation solution for buildings, industrial facilities and infrastructure projects.

Unlike techniques that rely on columns, inclusions or grouting, Vibrocompaction improves the existing soil mass directly through deep vibration and particle rearrangement. This approach makes it particularly effective for treating loose sands and granular soils while reducing liquefaction potential, providing an efficient, economical and sustainable solution for a wide range of ground improvement projects.

  • Mitigates liquefaction

  • Reduces settlement
  • Highly Economical
  • Significant depths of treatment
  • Simpler foundation design: lowers project risk
  • Loose soils

  • Uncompacted fill soils
  • Granular soils
  • Treat soils up to 45m deep

  • Bearing pressure of up to 300 kPa SLS

Vibrocompaction is performed by inserting a high-frequency vibrating probe into the ground to the required treatment depth. Penetration is achieved using the probe’s weight, vibration and, where required, water and/or air jets. The probe is then gradually withdrawn in successive stages, allowing the surrounding soil particles to rearrange into a denser configuration and improve the engineering properties of the ground.

Throughout the installation process, key parameters such as treatment depth, power consumption, penetration and withdrawal rates, and ground response are continuously monitored to ensure consistent treatment quality and compliance with the project’s performance requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vibrocompaction is a ground improvement technique that densifies loose saturated granular soils using a high-frequency vibrating probe. The process rearranges soil particles into a denser configuration, increasing soil density, improving bearing capacity and reducing settlement and liquefaction potential.

Vibrocompaction is commonly used where loose saturated granular soils require improvement before construction. It is particularly suitable for industrial developments, ports, airports, storage facilities and other infrastructure projects.

Vibrocompaction is most effective in clean sands and gravels with little or no fines. A geotechnical investigation is carried out to assess soil characteristics and determine whether the technique is appropriate for the project’s ground conditions.

A high-frequency vibrating probe is inserted into the ground to the required treatment depth before being gradually withdrawn. The vibration causes the surrounding soil particles to rearrange into a denser configuration, increasing soil strength and stiffness while reducing settlement.

Vibrocompaction improves bearing capacity, reduces settlement and decreases liquefaction potential without the need for additional materials. It provides an efficient and economical solution for treating large areas of loose granular soils.

Yes. By increasing the density of loose saturated granular soils, Vibrocompaction can significantly reduce the potential for soil liquefaction during seismic events where site conditions are suitable.

Quality control includes continuous monitoring of installation parameters such as treatment depth, power consumption, penetration and withdrawal rates, and ground response. Field testing before and after treatment is also performed to verify that the required ground improvement objectives have been achieved.

Vibrocompaction is an effective solution for improving loose saturated granular soils where increased bearing capacity, reduced settlement and improved seismic performance are required. By densifying the existing soil without adding inclusions or binders, it provides a cost-effective and sustainable ground improvement solution.
