About
Dynamic Compaction

Dynamic Compaction is a ground improvement technique that enhances loose granular soils by applying repeated high-energy impacts to the ground surface. The process increases soil density, improves bearing capacity and reduces settlement and liquefaction potential, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial, commercial and infrastructure projects.

With extensive expertise in impact ground improvement, Menard designs each Dynamic Compaction solution according to the site’s geotechnical conditions, structural requirements and performance objectives. Every installation is carried out under rigorous quality control procedures to ensure consistent treatment quality, reliable ground improvement and compliance with project specifications.

Improving ground performance through high-energy impact

Dynamic Compaction is a ground improvement technique that densifies loose granular soils by applying repeated high-energy impacts to the ground surface. The process increases soil density, improves bearing capacity and reduces settlement, providing a reliable foundation solution for buildings, industrial facilities and infrastructure projects.

Unlike techniques that rely on columns, inclusions or grouting, Dynamic Compaction improves the soil mass directly through controlled impact energy. This approach makes it particularly effective for treating large areas of loose fills and granular soils while reducing liquefaction potential, providing an efficient, economical and sustainable solution for a wide range of ground improvement projects.

  • Very cost-effective

  • Increased load-bearing capacity
  • Rapid installation: shorter project timelines
  • No excess soil generated
  • Low carbon, zero spoil approach
  • Granular soils

  • Sandy soils
  • Undocumented fill soils
  • Treat soils up to 12m deep

  • Bearing pressure of up to 300 kPa SLS
  • Pillar/trench size adjustable to requirements

Dynamic Compaction begins with a trial area to determine the optimum treatment grid, impact energy and compaction parameters for the site’s geotechnical conditions. A heavy tamper is then repeatedly dropped from a predetermined height at selected locations, transmitting high-energy impacts into the ground to densify the underlying soil.

The treatment is carried out in successive phases, typically progressing from deep compaction to intermediate layers before a final surface compaction pass is performed to achieve a uniform treatment profile. Throughout the installation process, key parameters such as impact energy, penetration, grid spacing and ground response are continuously monitored to ensure that the required ground improvement objectives are achieved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dynamic Compaction is a ground improvement technique that densifies loose granular soils by repeatedly dropping a heavy tamper from height onto the ground surface. The process increases soil density, improves bearing capacity and reduces settlement, creating a stable foundation platform for a wide range of construction projects.

Dynamic Compaction is commonly used to improve loose fills, granular soils and reclaimed land before construction. It is particularly suitable for large development sites, industrial facilities, ports, airports and infrastructure projects.

Dynamic Compaction is most effective in loose granular soils, uncontrolled fills and reclaimed land. The suitability of the technique depends on the site’s geotechnical conditions, groundwater level and the presence of compressible cohesive soils.

The technique applies repeated high-energy impacts to the ground surface, transmitting energy into the soil and causing the particles to rearrange into a denser configuration. This increases soil strength, improves bearing capacity and reduces both total and differential settlement.

Dynamic Compaction provides an economical solution for improving large areas of ground. It increases bearing capacity, reduces settlement and liquefaction potential, and can often reduce or eliminate the need for deep foundation systems.

Yes. By increasing the density of loose granular soils, Dynamic Compaction can significantly reduce the potential for soil liquefaction during seismic events, where site conditions are suitable.

Quality control includes monitoring key installation parameters such as impact energy, penetration and grid spacing throughout the treatment process. Field testing before and after treatment is also performed to verify that the required ground improvement objectives have been achieved.

Dynamic Compaction is particularly well suited to treating large areas of loose granular soils quickly and cost-effectively. Unlike techniques based on inclusions or grouting, it improves the soil mass directly through densification, making it an efficient solution for many large-scale ground improvement projects.
